The Weight of the Bag

There’s something about the final zip of that deployment bag that hits harder than words ever could. It’s more than just the gear packed inside. The boots, uniforms, toiletries, and rolled-up socks. It’s the emotional weight tucked between each item. The unspoken goodbye, the silent prayers, the deep breaths taken just to keep it all together.

When I watch him lift it, I don’t just see a heavy duffel, I see the burden of duty and the strength it takes to carry it. That bag holds months of separation, missed milestones, and long-distance love. It’s not just packed with essentials; it’s packed with everything that comes with being a military family. Resilience, sacrifice, and a whole lot of heart.

As it leaves our home, there’s an ache I can’t explain. But there’s also an abundance of pride. Even though the bag is heavy, it’s filled with purpose and the promise that we’ll be waiting, strong and ready, when he comes home.
