Don’t Worry, I Got This — A Note from Your Second Grader

Dear Mom and Dad,

I see you looking at me like I’m still that tiny kid with the backpack that used to swallow me whole. But let’s get something straight: I’m a second grader now. And that means I’ve got things to do, places to be, and a whole lot of confidence you didn’t see coming.

I know where my classroom is. I know how to find the bathroom without asking. I even remember to put my name on my paper… most of the time.

I may not say it, but I notice things now. Like when you hover a little at drop-off. Or when you double-check my backpack even though I told you I packed everything (yes, including the snack). It’s okay — I get it. I’m growing up faster than you expected.

Second grade is serious business. We’re reading real books now, doing math that makes you pause before answering, and learning how to navigate friendships on a whole new level. There’s drama, there’s teamwork, and yeah, there are still moments I’ll need you.

But here’s the thing:

Please don’t mistake my independence for not needing you. I still want to tell you about my day (even if I say “fine” at first). I still need help when the math gets hard or when I feel left out. I still love seeing your face in the pick-up line.

So take the photo, pack the lunch, write the note in my snack bag — I notice it all. Even when I pretend I don’t.

Second grade? I got this.

But it’s still better with you cheering me on.

Love,

Your Second Grader
